Man Dies After Suffering Over 500 Bee Stings
A man died after being stung more than 500 times by honeybees Wednesday as he cleared brush in Encinitas, California, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The bees attacked after the 55-year-old's backhoe struck their nest, which was on the ground at the man's rural property.

Officials said the victim, whose name was not released, was allergic to bee stings. He suffered a cardiac arrest after fleeing to an outhouse.

“He noticed a couple bees come back and sting him. He stopped, got off the tractor and there was a large swarm of bees all around. He started running and the bees pursued him,” Scott Henry, Encinitas deputy fire chief, said.

Firefighters found him in the outhouse and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man's 20-year-old nephew, who was working with him, escaped with a few stings.

Kellum said it was not immediately clear what type of bees were involved.

About 80 percent of wild bees in the area are Africanized honeybees — often known as killer bees, because they attack quickly and sting in larger numbers than their European honeybee cousins.
